A medical emergency is a frightening event. If you or a loved one needs emergency medical care, you can count on Providence Alaska Emergency Services Department for the highest level of assessment, diagnosis and treatment. You’ll know as soon as you arrive that you’re in the best hands, with all the resources necessary to give you the care you need. We’re here for you, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
We are recognized as a Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and by Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC). The Joint Commission, an independent group that accredits hospitals, recognizes our Emergency Department as an Advanced Primary Stroke Certified Center.
We are proud to provide the best emergency care in Alaska, not only for patients from Anchorage but also for those who are referred to us from all corners of our state.
We treat all injuries and illnesses that are considered life-threatening or that could result in serious complications if not addressed quickly. Some of these potentially life-threatening conditions include:
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop
- Changes in vision
- Confusion or changes in mental status
- Coughing or vomiting blood
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Difficulty speaking
- Fainting, sudden dizziness or weakness
- Heart attack or severe chest pain
- Loss of consciousness
- Medically necessary detoxification
- Severe allergic reactions
- Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Severe or unusual abdominal pain
- Stroke, sudden paralysis or slurred speech
- Sudden or severe pain
- Suicidal feelings
A medical emergency for your child is scary, and you want the best possible care, fast. Children have unique physiological, developmental and emotional needs, especially when they are sick or injured.
Our children’s emergency services are staffed by physicians and nurses who have the experience to handle any type of pediatric emergency. The pediatric area includes 13 private treatment rooms designed to provide a comforting environment for children and families to get the care they need when they need it.
We’re proud to be recognized as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons.
Men and women who have experienced interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, can choose to have a medical-forensic exam with a nurse at our Forensic Nursing Services.
People who are having a psychiatric and/or substance abuse crisis can find help in our psychiatric emergency department. Our mental-health professionals provide cost-effective services that are easy to access. These include crisis intervention, medical care and referrals for inpatient or outpatient care.
