Nursing Professional Practice Model
Our Nursing Professional Practice Model is the driving force of nursing care at Providence Saint John’s Health Center; a schematic depiction of the theories and systems that describe, collaborate, communicate and develop professionally to provide the highest-quality care for those served by our hospital.
The model guides our decision-making, aligns nursing practice and aids in the recruitment and retention of nurses across the hospital by providing a visual representation of how we deliver patient care.
We developed our model with the input and ideas from a diverse group of nurse leaders and direct care nurses from various regions and disciplines alongside our shared governance leadership council. Using teachings and ideas from several prominent nursing theories – including Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring and Mary Koloroutis’ Relationship-Based Care model – our team intertwined these theories to create a nursing practice model that is uniquely Providence Saint John’s, putting care and compassion at the forefront.
The three rings each exemplify Providence Saint John’s values in action:
- The outer ring represents the three pillars on which our nursing model stands: community, healing and humanity.
- The inner ring represents our holistic approach to caring for the body, mind and spirit in every one of our patients.
- The middle ring depicts the attributes of every Providence Saint John’s nurse: compassionate, evidence-led, interconnected, professional and whole person care.
