About Strokes

A stroke happens when blood to the brain is blocked or there is bleeding in the brain. These conditions can lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain, killing cells and possibly causing brain damage. A stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Women are more at risk of having a stroke than men, and the risk also increases with age. Improving your overall health by getting exercise, losing weight and lowering your blood pressure may reduce your risk.

Personalized Treatment for Your Stroke

No two patients are the same. This is why your care team works with you to design a treatment plan based specifically on your needs. It includes everything from diagnosis to post-treatment support and prevention of future strokes. Your care plan may include one or more of the following:

  • 24/7 interventional radiology
  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Clipping and coiling (for brain aneurysm)
  • Craniotomy
  • Mechanical thrombectomy

Why Choose Us for Your Stroke Care?

We’re the first – and only – Comprehensive Stroke Center in West Texas and eastern New Mexico. This prestigious accreditation recognizes our ability to offer the best stroke care available. In addition to outstanding outcomes, here are three more reasons to trust us with your stroke care:

If you’ve had a stroke, we work with you after your emergency treatment to find out why it happened. Since a stroke affects the heart and brain, our cardiologists and specialized vascular neurologists work together to build a personalized treatment plan for you. We are the only local hospital with neurointerventionalist physicians who specialize in minimally invasive procedures, available 24/7 to treat you. Procedures include round-the-clock brain aneurysm coiling, which blocks blood flow into the aneurysm and needs to be done quickly to be effective. We also have a neurological intensive care unit (ICU) and fellowship-trained neuro-critical care neurologists.

We provide dedicated nurse navigation care for all patients recovering from a stroke to maximize quality of life during and after treatment. Our nurse navigators help coordinate your care with your primary care physician, follow up with you during your recovery and help handle insurance issues. If you need skilled nursing care, navigators can help you and your family make the right arrangements.

Covenant Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center offers options and hope to patients seeking the most advanced therapies for their stroke or other neurological condition. We’re the only hospital in the region invited to participate in NIH StrokeNet. As our patient, you can take part in these small and large clinical trials and research studies that advance treatment, prevention and recovery following a stroke. Such groundbreaking research and innovation translates to better care – and a better life – for you and your loved ones.
