Dr. Amy Herold speaks to impact cuts to Medi-Cal would have on California's disadvantaged

Dr. Herold is one of many Providence leaders who have spoken to the impact drastic cuts to Medicaid (Medi-Cal) would have on California’s most disadvantaged.

Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Medical Officer Dr. Amy Herold recently joined Providence leaders from our Sonoma County ministries at town hall meetings organized by Congressman Mike Thompson.

During the events, Dr. Herold and Petaluma Valley Hospital/Healdsburg Hospital Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Oxford spoke about our commitment to caring for the poor and vulnerable, the communities we serve, and the impact drastic cuts to Medicaid (Medi-Cal) would have on California’s most disadvantaged.

Soon after one of these townhalls, Dr. Herold was invited by Congressman Mike Thompson to be his only guest at the President’s address to Congress on March 4, 2025, to represent local physicians, health care providers, and staff who witness the impact of this program every day.

“I was honored to attend as Congressman Thompson’s guest. As a doctor and hospital administrator, I’ve seen firsthand how our state's Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, is a lifeline for both patients and providers. Cutting Medicaid would leave 15 million Californians without access to the health care they need. The loss of this funding would destabilize health care organizations nationwide and force hospitals to cut programs that impact everyone, whether or not you have health insurance,” said Dr. Herold.

Dr. Herold is working with Providence government affairs to preserve affordable access to care, improve health system sustainability, strengthen our workforce, and promote social and environmental justice.

In addition to attending the President’s address, Dr. Herold recently participated in press conferences with Congressman Thompson as well as Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Reps. Lateefah Simon and Kevin Mullin (click here to watch the press conference held on March 18). She has also attended the American Hospital Association’s national meeting.
