If you need emergency care, you can rest assured that you or a loved one will receive prompt, leading-edge treatment right here at home. Our emergency department provides 24-hour access to the same high level of care as a large urban hospital.

Mount Carmel offers the intimacy and convenience of a community hospital with the efficiency of an advanced emergency department.

Our emergency teams treat the sickest adults and children first. When you come to the ER, a nurse evaluates your symptoms and decides how quickly you should see a doctor. To provide the best care, patients with the most urgent needs are seen right away. This means you may wait a short time for treatment.

Our emergency doctors and nurses are highly skilled at treating all types of injuries, sudden illnesses and accidents — especially those that may be life threatening or cause serious complications.

Emergency medical conditions we treat include:

  • Abdominal pain that is severe or unusual
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop
  • Changes in vision
  • Confusion or changes in mental status
  • Coughing or vomiting blood
  • Diarrhea that is severe or persistent
  • Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness
  • Heart attack or severe chest pain
  • Headache that is severe and prolonged
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Medically necessary detoxification
  • Pain that is sudden or severe
  • Stroke symptoms such as sudden paralysis or slurred speech
  • Suicidal feelings
  • Vomiting that is severe or persistent

If you experience any of these symptoms, go immediately to the nearest emergency department or call 911.

We know that wait times are top of mind when you aren’t feeling your best. We try to see everyone as quickly as we can, but we do not always treat by order of arrival. We care for patients whose conditions are the most serious first. To help ease wait times on the weekend, we are staffed with additional providers to treat minor illnesses and injuries more quickly.

When you see an emergency doctor or nurse in the treatment area at Providence Mount Carmel Hospital, you get access to the same diagnostic imaging equipment and technology available at bigger hospitals.

Your care team will examine you and talk with you about your symptoms. Different tests may be ordered to diagnose your condition, including lab work, X-rays, and diagnostic scans such as MRI, and CT scans.

Your doctor will discuss your test results with you and talk with you about your treatment options. If necessary, you may be admitted to the hospital for observation or further care.

If your condition can be treated without a hospital stay, your emergency care team will provide you with instructions for self-care at home and when to follow up with your personal doctor.
