NEWS RELEASE
Protecting your access to health care is our priority
Providence cares deeply for our caregivers and patients, and we’ve always been committed
to offering access to safe, quality health care. We have negotiated in good faith for
more than a year to reach agreements with the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA).
The union has delayed and let contracts expire with the intent of forcing strikes, which
will begin at all eight Providence Oregon hospitals and several clinics this Friday. Some
physicians, including hospitalists and OB providers, are also included.
Providence has been fully committed to reaching an agreement. However, union leaders
are unwilling to compromise and are not being transparent about our offers:
- A 20% raise over the next three years for acute-care RNs with a double-digit pay
increase after contract ratification — before overtime, holiday pay or other incentives. - A physician contract proposing compensation increases/incentives, which for many
full-time represented physicians could exceed $20,000 to $30,000. - Up to $5,000 ratification bonuses for acute-care RNs whose contracts are expired.
Getting care during the strike
The strike will impact community health and patient access. Our hospitals will be able to
offer key services, but it will not be business as usual. For some services, Providence will
need to cancel appointments and we’re contacting affected patients to let them know.
ONA called a physician strike with this intent and is fully responsible for disruptions in
your care.
Resolving the strike
We support nurses and physicians, but these strikes will compromise access to care.
Join us in asking ONA to accept the generous offers on the table and return to work.
Providence has provided quality care to Oregonians for more than 150 years. Our
commitment to taking care of our patients, caregivers and communities will not waver.
