Coronary Calcium Score Screening

A Coronary Calcium Score, or CCS, is a noninvasive imaging technique that scans the heart for calcified plaque. If calcium deposits are detected in the coronary arteries, it could indicate risk for heart disease or a future heart attack.

You should consider a CCS if you are between 40 and 70 years old, have an increased risk for heart disease, but do not actually have any symptoms yet. You are at an increased risk if:

  • You have a family history of heart disease
  • You are a past or present smoker
  • You have history of high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure
  • You are overweight and/or have an inactive lifestyle

What to Expect

When you schedule a coronary calcium score screening, you will be asked to avoid caffeine and smoking four hours prior to the exam.

  • Once in the exam room, you will be asked to remove any metal from the upper chest area that will be scanned (necklaces, undergarments, etc.)
  • After laying down on the CT table, electrocardiogram ECG leads will be placed on your chest.
  • You will be asked to hold your breath a couple of times (for no longer than 15 seconds), while the table moves back and forth

The test will take no longer than five minutes to complete.

Results

Our Imaging team processes the images and then sends the results to your cardiologist. Your doctor will receive your calcium score report in approximately two business days.
