Providence is committed to improving the health of our communities through nutrition counseling, diabetes education and prevention, and health education. We offer services throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Providence Community Teaching Kitchen is a unique medical-based program that empowers individuals to take control of their health and well-being through nutrition, lifestyle choices and culinary medicine. Whether you are looking to improve your health outcomes, learn new cooking skills or connect with others in your community, the teaching kitchen has something for everyone.
- With a focus on food access, the teaching kitchen provides access to healthy food with our on-site food pantry, as well as a 48-bed community garden.
- Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is provided by Providence’s registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) who are state licensed or certified.
- Hands-on cooking classes are taught by chefs and dietitians. Offered in English and Spanish
Whether you have had diabetes for some time or are newly diagnosed, our program offers you and your family the knowledge and self-care skills necessary to live a healthy life.
Diabetes is a serious and complicated condition, but it doesn’t have to control your life. Education is vital for diabetes management. Successful outcomes depend on your active involvement in your care. By arming yourself with information, regular health care, and a little motivation, you can learn to manage diabetes. We can help. Providence Diabetes Education serves to improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes.
We are accredited by the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES).
Diabetes education is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies. Financial assistance is available if you do not have insurance.

Providence offers a variety of community health education classes to help individuals achieve wellness at every stage in life.
From childbirth education to smoking cessation to pain education, we offer a host of classes that will meet the needs of all those in our communities. Classes include:
- Healthy Families: Pregnancy & Parenting Classes (in-person, online and eLearning classes available)
- Strong for Life Exercise Program: Fall prevention in the Community

Outpatient Nutrition Services offers you information and support to eat in a way that aligns with your goals and nutritional needs. Our staff of Registered Dietitians are experienced in nutrition counseling for people of all ages.
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is provided by Providence’s registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) who are state licensed. RDN’s counsel individuals on behavioral and lifestyle changes related to improving their nutrition. MNT visits include discussion with the RDN to develop a plan and set goals that meet the individual’s needs.

Lose weight and improve your health with a one-year lifestyle change program.
Prevent: Diabetes Prevention Program (Prevent: DPP) is an evidence-based, nationally recognized program proven to promote & maintain weight loss, prevent type 2 diabetes, & improve overall health.
Virtual and limited in-person classes available based on demand.
To participate, you cannot have a previous diagnosis of type 1 or 2 diabetes and must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a BMI of 25 or higher, or 23 for Asian-Americans. (Find out your BMI)
- Have at least one of the following:
- Fasting blood sugar of 100-125 mg/dL (110-125 mg/dL for Medicare members)**
- Hemoglobin A1c of 5.7%-6.4%**
- History of gestational diabetes**
- Diabetes risk score of 5 or higher** (Take a risk test)
**Medicare members must meet blood test criteria regardless of risk score or history of gestational diabetes.
Prevent is covered in full with no out of pocket expense to eligible members & dependents of:
- Providence Health Plan Medicare Advantage plans
- Providence Health Plan for Providence caregivers
- Providence Health Plan for Intel employees
- Oregon Medicaid plans
- Medicare A & B Plans
Prevent staff will verify DPP insurance benefits for other plans. Open to those without coverage for DPP as a self-pay option for those that meet eligibility.
Attend an upcoming orientation session to learn more about our program. Prevent staff will verify insurance coverage upon enrollment into the program.
