Mother & Baby Unit
Here at Providence Alaska Children's Hospital, we keep you and your newborn together in the same room whenever possible. Newborns do better when they’re with their mom immediately after birth. Being near each other increases your bonding time, helps your baby sleep better and allows you to become more quickly attuned to your newborn’s needs.
Immediately after birth we encourage you to have a full hour of uninterrupted skin-to-skin time, which helps regulate your baby’s breathing, blood sugar and body temperature.
We also practice couplet care, which means the same nurses will care for you and your child. This allows the nurse to see how you’re doing together and better monitor breastfeeding, bonding and more.
At Providence you’ll have comfortable accommodations to enjoy getting to know your newborn. Our Mother-Baby rooms include:
- Private bathroom and shower
- Comfortable couch that converts to a guest bed
- Cable TV, DVD player and free WiFi
- In-room refrigerator
- Scenic view from most rooms
