Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
At Providence, we hold ourselves accountable to do the right things for the right reasons. Recognizing the link between environmental health and public health, we are committed to fiscally responsible environment protection practices to benefit the health and quality of life of our patients, caregivers and communities.
We evaluate our supply chain to identify opportunities where we have the greatest impact to reduce harmful chemicals, waste and greenhouse gas emissions. We consistently work with suppliers to manufacture products and equipment with consideration to:
- Reduce wasteful packaging
- Increase use of recycled materials in the manufacturing of purchased products
- Use of energy-efficient equipment
- Product’s ability to be re-processed and/or recycled
- Use of reprocessed products
- Toxicity and minimizing products containing lead, mercury, latex, polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC) and di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and fragrances
- Participation in the EPA Smartway program
For 15 years, Providence ministries have been members of Practice Greenhealth – a national member organization dedicated to reducing the impact of health care organizations and hospitals on the environment. Multiple Providence ministries have been recognized with Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards. This success is dependent, in part, on supply chain relations and practices that identify, measure and reduce pollution and harm to the natural environment — our common home.
