James’ Experience

James is a real patient who survived a heart incident with the help of Providence Swedish in 2015.

Although James had just passed his annual wellness exam, one day he started experiencing severe back pain. It turned out that he was suffering from an aortic dissection – a rare condition, often genetic, that causes the layers of the heart’s largest blood vessel to separate.

Thanks to the doctors at Providence Swedish, James survived major open-heart surgery, but he also struggled with depression during his recovery. After several years, he found purpose in helping others feel less alone.

Now, James, a former professional basketball player, runs a non-profit organization dedicated to mental health awareness and works on mental health initiatives with the NBA.
