At Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, our dedication to medical excellence allows us to offer the latest advancements in robotics technology. We use this technology to provide each patient the most effective and precise robot-assisted surgical options.

Robot-assisted surgeries are high-tech procedures with the potential for significantly less pain, decreased risk of complications, shorter hospital stays and faster returns to normal daily activities.

Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center uses the Da Vinci System. This state-of-the-art machine has revolutionized the way we provide comprehensive and effective surgeries. With the da Vinci Surgical System, surgeons operate through just a few small incisions and use robotic arms to complete their procedures.

Robot features

The da Vinci robot is made up of various arms attached to a base unit. The robot’s base is wired to a computer console, where every arm movement is controlled by a trained and experienced surgeon. The arms feature various tools, including:

  • Endoscopic cameras for viewing inside the body
  • Sharp, scissor-like instruments for cutting
  • Wristed instruments with a high range of motion
  • Sophisticated sewing tools that resemble tiny pliers
  • Laser tools and miniature scalpels

The system’s endoscopic cameras create a magnified 3-D, high-definition vision system and its tiny wristed instruments can bend and rotate more than the human hand. As a result, da Vinci enables your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.

Thanks to our investment in the latest medical technology, patients who undergo robotic surgery have the opportunity to experience better outcomes and benefits. These include:

  • Increased precision during surgery
  • Reduced trauma
  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced risk of complications following surgery
  • Reduced scarring

We’re able to use the latest in advanced medical technology to assist in:

  • General surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Urologic surgery
  • Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Spine surgery

Half of men in their 50s suffer benign prostatic hyperplasia – enlargement of the prostate gland – a condition that is progressive, initially annoying and frustrating, but can lead to significant lifestyle alterations.

Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center is the first hospital in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities to provide a therapy called Aquablation, a state-of-the-art procedure to treat men with enlarged prostates that can cause symptoms including frequent urination, difficulty urinating and incontinence.

Our leading urology team performs the minimally invasive therapy using the AquaBeam Robotic System, the first FDA-cleared, surgical robot utilizing automated tissue resection for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms related to problems with your bladder, prostate or urethra. It combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotic technology and waterjet ablation technology for targeted, controlled and immediate removal of prostate tissue. Aquablation therapy is effective regardless of prostate shape or size.

Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a powerful water jet – nearly the speed of sound. Using a combination of real-time ultrasound and direct vision through a tiny camera inserted through the urethra, the robot controls the removal of the excess prostate tissue. Studies show the procedure is safe and highly effective, results in minimal bleeding and guards against complications including sexual side effects and incontinence. Most cases are covered by Medicare.

Because of its success, Aquablation is in demand by men who have tried medication but are looking for a lasting solution with a very minimal risk of irreversible complications. Our hospital is one of a few that have obtained the technology and training.

If left untreated, an enlarged prostate can cause significant health problems, including irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence. Surgical treatment options often force men to choose between symptom relief and irreversible complications including sexual and urinary dysfunction.
