Overview

Unlike many cancers, colon cancer is largely preventable through timely screenings. Screening tests such as colonoscopy or Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) play a crucial role in identifying polyps or colorectal cancer, stemming from the development of these growths on the colon or rectum lining. Talk to your doctor about which test is right for you.

The American Cancer Society and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently revised their guidelines to begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Contact your health insurance provider to learn about coverage information for colorectal screening. Learn more about screening and risk reduction.

About Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure and usually takes less than 30 minutes to perform. The procedure allows for comprehensive evaluation of various colorectal conditions, including ulcers, polyps, and cancer. If polyps are found, detailed imaging allows precise diagnosis and treatment planning. If no polyps are found, this test only needs to be done about once every 10 years.

Because colonoscopies involve entering the gastrointestinal tract, preparation typically involves dietary adjustments and medication to cleanse the colon up to three days before your procedure. Learn more about what to expect.

Scheduling Your Colonoscopy

We know your time is important and have developed an efficient process for scheduling your colonoscopy at the Direct Access Colonoscopy Clinic. Once we receive a referral from your primary care physician, we will contact you to schedule your procedure.

Before your appointment, a nurse will call you to discuss how to prepare for your test and will answer any questions you may have. On the day of your colonoscopy, your doctor will talk with you before the procedure and will answer any final questions. Registered nurses with advanced training will assist the doctor with your exam.

Because you will be given medications to help you relax, it won’t be safe for you to drive home after your procedure. Please arrange to have a driver accompany you to the appointment.
