Why do I need lab work?

Blood tests and other lab work provide useful information that helps your doctor diagnose, treat and monitor health conditions.

If you’re unsure why you’re having a particular test, we recommend speaking with your doctor. Lab staff are happy to answer questions about your test and how to prepare for it, but they may not know why your doctor has ordered the test.

Why must I fast before some lab tests?

Certain tests are sensitive to changes that occur in your body with digestion. For accurate results, it may be important to avoid eating or drinking anything but water before your test.

Fasting times vary depending on the type of test you’re having. If you have questions about whether or how long you should fast before a lab test, ask your doctor or contact us.

What should I do with my lab results?

Lab results are viewable in MyChart or a paper copy could be obtained from Hospital Information Management (HIM). To contact HIM call 406-543-7271. A copy of your results is also sent to your doctor. It can be helpful for you to keep a copy for yourself as well. This allows for future test results to be compared. If your test results are abnormal, it’s important to discuss them with your doctor.
