About Joseph I. Kang
Dr. Joseph Kang completed the medical scientist training program Loma Linda University where he earned his MD and a PhD in Biochemistry. His PhD research focused on DNA and epigenetic damage from inflammatory processes leading to multiple publications and presentations. After completing his medicine internship at UCLA-Olive View Medical Center, he returned to Loma Linda University for Radiation Oncology specialty training where he also served as Chief Resident. After completing his residency he went on to become Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Loma Linda University Medical Center. He spearheaded multiple clinical trials including Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for liver metastases and chemo-radiation therapy for bladder cancer. During his tenure, he served as the Chief of Service for Head and Neck Cancers and Urologic Cancers. One fond memory is debating national experts on stage for Crossfire: Controversies in Urology at the American Urological Association meeting on why radiotherapy is superior to surgery in the treatment of high risk prostate cancer. He also served as the head of Radiosurgery program at Loma Linda spearheading radiosurgical treatment of brain metastases, acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas and arterio-venous malformation. He was beloved by his residents and honored with a Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology (ARRO) Educator of the Year award.
