Dr. Scott Wellmann grew up on a farm in a small town in Northwest Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Notre Dame in 1988, and he graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992. He stayed in Cincinnati to complete a residency in Pediatrics and Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at the renowned Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. When he completed his Fellowship in 1998, he moved to Alaska to begin practice. Dr. Wellmann enjoys all aspects of his specialty. He is accomplished and experienced with diagnostic and interventional procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab, including closure of congenital heart defects through device placement. A strong advocate for the continued advancement of the cardiac health of all Alaskans, Dr. Wellmann sits on the Board of Directors of Alaska Chapter of the American Heart Association. He has served as the Medical Staff Department Chair of Pediatrics for the Children’s Hospital at Providence. During his tenure, he proposed routine oxygen saturation monitoring of newborns prior to discharge from the hospital as a means to detect cyanotic heart defects. As a result, the screening was implemented at Providence years before it became the standard of care nationally. He currently sits on the Medical Staff Credentials and Pediatric Critical Care Committees at Providence. A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he is an accomplished educator and advocate for excellence in health care. He participates in the selection process and education of the physicians participating in the Pediatric Residency Alaska Tract. He received the “Instructor of the Year Award” from the Alaska Family Practice Residency Program. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners honored Dr. Wellmann with the Advocate of the Year Award for the state of Alaska. Dr. Wellmann has extensive experience in Pediatric Intensive Care and served as a primary intensivist covering the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for the Children’s Hospital at Providence for six years before he opened Alaska Children's Heart Center, LLC.
