About Courtney C. J. Voelker
Courtney Voelker, M.D., Ph.D. (D.Phil. Oxon), is a Rhodes Scholar and board certified neurotologist. She is Director of Otology/Neurotology-Lateral Skull Base Surgery; and Director of the Adult & Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program at Pacific Neuroscience Institute. She is an otolaryngology – head & neck surgeon who takes care of adult and pediatric patients seeing a wide range of inner ear conditions. A Super Doctor Rising Star award recipient, she is committed to offering high quality, compassionate care to all her patients.
Prior to joining PNI, Dr. Voelker was at USC Caruso Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Keck School of Medicine of USC as Division Chief of Otology, Neurotology and Lateral Skull Base Surgery and the Director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Previously, Dr. Voelker served as Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She has conducted leading-edge research on the physiology and diseases of the inner ear at Brown University, the University of Oxford, Washington University in St. Louis, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as cancer research at the University of Portland.
Dr. Voelker has authored numerous research publications and textbook chapters in her field and also holds several patents. Dr. Voelker regularly organizes and leads temporal bone courses to teach surgical techniques to fellow otolaryngologists. Additionally, she has volunteered with Global ENT Outreach, a medical mission that traveled to Bolivia to provide surgical care to patients without access to a neurotologist and to teach neurotological techniques to Bloivian otolaryngologists. She is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and the American Neurotologic Society.
Dr. Voelker graduated with Honors from Brown University (elected to Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society). Dr. Voelker earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, having been selected for both the Brown-Dartmouth Medical Program as well as the Program in Liberal Medical Education. As a Rhodes Scholar, she earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford in developmental neurobiology. She completed her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the Washington University (Barnes-Jewish Hospital) in St. Louis and her fellowship at the world-renowned House Ear Institute and Clinic in Los Angeles.

Dr Voelker is clearly at the top of her game, but the two visits I've had with her both seemed very rushed (even after I waited an hour to see her). Her explanations, while Informed, are super fast, and It's very difficult to understand what are the next steps or how a diagnosis would ultimately be determined. In my case, In the end, she referred me back to my primary care provider as the best one to make sense of all of the tests. That doesn't really make sense to me as ENT/head issues aren't her specialty, but I guess I'll go back to square one with my PCP. Ultimately I felt like I waited for an hour to have a 5 minute conversation that ended with "hmmm, whatever issue you seem to have isn't my specialty so good luck" kind of comment.

My condition has been ongoing for months and Dr Voelker was referred by my regular ENT who basically gave up on me. Dr Voelker immediately assessed the situation, ordered new and different tests and most of all, LISTENED to me and respected that I had documented everything and together we came up with a workable game plan. Not easy for me logistically because I live in Ventura and she is in WLA but I finally feel hope that she will get to the bottom of it all and I will make arrangements to be available for any appointments or procedures.
