About Michael D. Hwang
After completing my undergraduate studies at Duke University, I went on to earn my medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. I grew up in Massachusetts but have now adopted the Pacific Northwest as my home. I lived in Seattle for five years prior to moving to Portland in 2012. My wife, whom I met in medical school, was born and raised here. I chose orthopedic surgery as a career because I was fascinated with the interplay between anatomy and biomechanics, and I found getting people back to doing the things they loved very rewarding. I am dual fellowship trained in hand surgery and sports medicine, including minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. My practice primarily consists of treating conditions of the upper extremity, but I also do some general orthopedic surgery such as fracture care. My core philosophy is shared decision making. I enjoy educating patients about their condition, explaining the treatment options, and helping them choose which course of action will best fit their personality and their lifestyle. I thrive by spending time with my wife and two kids and traveling to new places. I love my work, but it’s the time away from work that recharges me. Dr. Hwang was elected as a top doctor in Portland Monthly’s 2014 and 2016-2018 “Top Docs and Nurses” feature.
