Michael R. Shapiro, MD

Dr. Shapiro practices orthopaedic surgery with a subspecialty in knee and shoulder surgery, arthroscopic techniques, and joint replacement. He is, however, available and qualified for consultation and treatment of all orthopaedic problems. He works in conjunction with other highly qualified specialists, and will team up with other top surgeons for the management of complicated problems in areas such as spine disease, pediatric orthopaedics, or unusual problems in the hand. Dr. Shapiro has performed arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgeries on competitive athletes in intercollegiate and professional sports. Some of his patients are currently active in high level competition in basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, tennis, and skiing. He has been an innovator in arthroscopic ligament surgeries and in biologic joint reconstruction with meniscal transplants, in which he has done award-winning research. He is a graduate of Princeton University and Case Western Reserve Medical School. He trained at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and was fellowship trained with the U.S. Ski Team physicians at Tahoe Fracture Clinic. He was also associated with the founder of the department of sports medicine at UCLA. As time permits, he is an avid golfer and skier.
