About Lan Ban
Lan Ban, MD, enjoyed teaching after college, a first career that inspired him to become a physician. “As a teacher, I enjoyed talking with students, learning from them, and building relationships. Teaching taught me to celebrate small successes and problem-solve with creativity,” he recalls. In his medical practice today, he continues to use the same principles with his patients that he used with his students. “Being a medical provider allows me to interact with people and continuously learn and teach.”
Dr. Ban encourages patients to participate actively in their own care, emphasizing the importance of a care plan designed together. He also places high importance on patient autonomy and their role in shared medical decision-making. “I value each person as a whole regardless of their background, social standing, gender, race, age, or sexual orientation,” he says. “Anyone can become sick, and everyone who’s sick can benefit from some medical attention.”
Dr. Ban has an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. After college, he spent a year with AmeriCorps tutoring students with learning disabilities and teaching algebra at an inner-city high school in Tennessee. He then pursued his medical degree at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and completed his internship and residency at Providence St. Vincent Hospital.
Born and raised in China, Dr. Ban came to the United States at age 16 and spent most of his time in Georgia and Tennessee. He enjoys hiking and soccer and is fluent in Mandarin.
