They say progress is not always linear and neither was my path in medicine. Having done my medical training in locations ranging from the Caribbean to the East coast, I was humbled by patients and mentors from all walks of life. After medical school, my residency training brought me back to California with a slightly used Malamute. Though set in a violent environment, working at a county hospital in Oakland gave me the fortitude to weather almost anything. Then, as an internist in a small community hospital caring mostly for indigents and immigrants, I learned to make the most of scant resources. Through it all, the universal lesson that binds is a person’s need to be heard. Now with Paloma Medical Group, I recall what originally brought me to pursue medicine – the immense desire to be a part of the lives of others. And what better way to experience this than the privilege of caring for another?
