About Richard M. Gillespie
Dr. Gillespie is a double board-certified thoracic surgical oncologist specializing in chest malignancy including lung and esophageal cancers. He has specialized training and expertise in multiple minimally invasive techniques including robotic assisted thoracic surgery of the lung and esophagus, navigational and robotic bronchoscopy, and advanced bronchoscopic therapies. In addition to his work with cancer patients, Dr. Gillespie also has expertise in a variety of benign diseases including esophageal motility disorders, diaphragmatic disorders, chest wall injury, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
Dr. Gillespie started his career at the University of North Carolina Rex Cancer Center in Raleigh, NC. Over 10 years, he founded and developed programs dedicated to the care of thoracic patients including robotic thoracic surgery, minimally invasive esophageal surgery, navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, lung cancer screening, and smoking cessation. He relocated to Scottsdale, AZ in 2021 to be the medical director of a new thoracic oncology program at HonorHealth. As of January 2025, Dr. Gillespie started at Providence as the Medical Director of the Disney Family Cancer Center and Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Saint Joseph Medical Center.
