HeartSmart Women
You may be surprised to find that heart disease takes the life of one of every three women each year. Providence is committed to educating women about disease risk factors and prevention by offering a cardiac assessment or HeartSmart Screening.
Risk Factors
Learning about your risk factors is often the first step to prevention. Maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly, monitoring your blood pressure and having your cholesterol levels checked are all ways you can help prevent heart disease.
You may be at risk for heart disease if you:
• Smoke
• Are overweight
• Are diabetic
• Are under stress
• Have high cholesterol
• Have high blood pressure
• Are not physically active
• Are postmenopausal
• Have a family history of heart disease
Symptoms
Ever watched a medical drama or talked to a man who had a heart attack? You may have seen a dramatic scene on TV where a man clutches his chest in pain. Yet for women, the warning signs of heart attack are frequently much different. Learning to recognize the symptoms can help you get treatment sooner and minimize damage to the heart muscle.
Some warning signs that occur in women include:
• Shortness of breath, with or without chest pain
• Flu-like symptoms—nausea, clamminess or cold sweats
• Pain in the upper back, shoulders, neck or jaw
• Unexplained anxiety, fatigue, weakness or dizziness.
If you or anyone you know shows these signs, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
