Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services in Oregon, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, care centers, health plans, physicians, clinics, home health services, affiliated services and educational facilities. Providence Health & Services has a presence in five Western states: Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, the largest Providence hospital in Oregon, is renowned for its many specialized programs and for pioneering research. It is also a teaching hospital with an excellent internal medicine resident training program. Providence St. Vincent Medical Center was the first hospital in the state to receive Magnet recognition for excellence in nursing and is the only hospital to be redesignated for the third time.


About the Area
Located just off Highway 26 in west Portland, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is one of four Providence Health & Services hospitals in the greater Portland area. Programs and Services
Providence Cancer Center
Providence Cancer Center at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center provides diagnosis, treatment, prevention, support, education and access to clinical research trials. Providence Cancer Center includes the Ruth J. Spear Breast Center, the Integrative Medicine Program, a smoking cessation program, and access to research, clinical trials and other services through the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center in the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute.

Providence Heart and Vascular Institute
Providence Heart and Vascular Institute is an internationally renowned leader in cardiovascular care, research and education. Medical director Albert Starr, M.D., was awarded the highest American honor in medical science in 2007, the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award. Among the institute’s many specialized services are treatment of advanced heart disease; interventional cardiovascular research and ongoing clinical trials; the latest electrophysiology interventions and advanced treatment of atrial fibrillation; and advanced vascular and endovascular surgery. Consistent excellence in cardiovascular care has earned the 2009 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks award and four consecutive gold Get With The Guidelines awards. In 2009, the median time for treating heart attack patients was 61 minutes, well ahead of the 90-minute door-to-balloon guidelines set by the American College of Cardiology.

Providence Brain Institute
Providence Brain Institute is a comprehensive, integrated program that treats all conditions of the brain and spine, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, memory disorders, neuropathies, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, spine conditions, brain tumors, aneurysms and pediatric neurological conditions. The program treats more stroke patients than any other provider in Oregon and consistently exceeds the American Stroke Association’s quality guidelines. In 2009, Providence launched a telestroke network expanding 24-hour stroke care and expertise to Oregon’s community hospitals.

Among Providence Brain Institute’s physicians are fellowship-trained specialists, leading researchers and experts in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques. Providence Brain Institute also offers sophisticated technologies including iMRI, the world’s most advanced intraoperative neurosurgical imaging system; the most advanced neuro-biplane laboratory in the Pacific Northwest; and two epilepsy monitoring units.

Providence Women’s Health
Providence in Oregon is dedicated to providing exceptional, integrated care to women and children, with a wide range of programs that serve patients through all phases of their life. The Women and Children’s Health Research Center focuses on topics such as the medical issues of pregnant women and newborns, breast cancer screening and prevention, continence, osteoporosis, physician-patient communication, patient safety and family violence prevention.

Oregon Medical Laser Center
Oregon Medical Laser Center is one of the country’s leading biomedical laser research facilities and the only center of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. The center is a pioneer in harnessing laser energy to treat medical conditions. Its research has led to improvements in the treatment of heart disease, stroke and cancer, and in organ and tissue replacement and hemorrhage control. Among the center’s most notable discoveries are technologies for hemorrhage control on the battlefield and in civilian medical and dental settings. Regenerative medicine using cell therapy for cardiac, limb and nerve regeneration is another focus of the center’s research. The center collaborates with local universities in many of its research endeavors.

Providence Center for Health Care Ethics
Providence Center for Health Care Ethics offers comprehensive ethics education and consultation resources benefiting Providence health care providers, patients and families throughout Oregon. It promotes ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue on contemporary issues in health care ethics.

Children at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center
Providence provides a wide range of services for children and their families, including the Gerry Frank Center for Children’s Care, a neurodevelopmental center, emergency services specifically for children, pediatric surgery in a 12-bed inpatient unit, general pediatric services and highly regarded maternity services. The NICU is a Level III state-of-the-art facility that provides care for critically ill newborns and their families.

Providence Rehabilitation Services
Providence Rehabilitation Services helps adults and children regain strength and independence following illness, injury or disability. Specialty areas include sports therapy, women’s pelvic conditions, cancer and lymphedema treatments, and children’s developmental therapy.
