Providence Alaska Medical Center is part of Providence Health & Services, a not-for-profit network of hospitals, care centers, health plans, physicians, clinics, home health services, affiliated services and educational facilities. Providence Health & Services has a presence in five Western states: Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
Providence Alaska Medical Center is the largest hospital in Alaska. Located in Anchorage, it offers full-service, comprehensive care to all Alaskans — a role unmatched by any other medical facility in the state.
About the Area
Anchorage is surrounded by mountains and water in scenic south-central Alaska. The Chugach Mountain Range embraces the city to the east and south, while to the west and north is Cook Inlet, named after the explorer Captain James Cook, who sailed into the area in 1778. With a population of approximately 280,000, Anchorage is a perfect place to enjoy urban life while surrounded by spectacular wilderness. Residents and visitors enjoy easy access to the great outdoors, from fishing for salmon in the heart of downtown or stepping onto a glacier a few miles down the road, to hiking or skiing in the nearby mountains or strolling along Anchorage’s many miles of scenic trails.
Programs and Services
Providence Alaska Medical Center continues the tradition of the Sisters of Providence — who arrived in Alaska more than 100 years ago — by providing health services, facilities, equipment and care that benefit all Alaskans. As the largest medical center in the state, we have the technology, expertise and resources to treat everything from broken bones to cancer to complicated births. We approach every patient with compassion and respect. Providence Alaska Medical Center is also the most advanced medical center in the state, making it possible for Alaskans to stay in-state for complicated treatments such as heart procedures or inpatient oncology care. Our goal is to keep Alaskans close to their homes and families while they heal.
Heart Center
Located within the medical center, Providence Heart Center has four identical labs with advanced technologies and a state-of-the-art electrophysiology lab. These facilities provide services such as pre- and post-cath lab observation, echo, EKG, cardiac rehab and pulmonary rehab. Our labs are staffed with experienced technicians, nurses and cardiologists who perform complicated procedures such as minimally invasive valve surgery, a high-tech nonsurgical method that is not available anywhere else in Alaska. Providence Heart Center plays a leading role in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cardiovascular conditions in Alaska’s men and women.
Cancer Center
Emphasizing a team approach to cancer care, our new center offers a holistic environment for healing. The 54,000-square-foot center provides access to specialized cancer physicians and other cancer professionals, the latest in radiation therapy technology, a variety of clinical trials, navigators for one-on-one guidance, genetic counseling and an educational resource center available to all Alaskans.
Surgery Services
Our state-of-the-art surgery facility includes 17 operating room suites, with six dedicated to day surgery. Our team of more than 60 board-certified surgeons covers trauma for the entire state and performs some 12,000 inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures each year. Specialties include open heart and thoracic, neurological, general, gynecologic, genitourinary, and eye, ear, nose and throat. We have been using robotic-assisted surgery since 2005.
Adult Critical Care
The critical care unit consists of 20 beds for intensive and coronary care. Each room features complete 360- degree patient bed mobility accompanied by hydraulic booms mounted on the ceiling for outlets and medical
gases. Other features of this unit include a satellite
pharmacy staffed with a 24-hour pharmacist, digital
teleradiology systems for fast comparisons and diagnosis,
and decentralized nursing stations for delivering
individualized care.
The Children’s Hospital at Providence
With the only children’s hospital in the state, we cater
to the special needs of young patients. Our medical
specialists are able to care for children with all levels of
illness and medical conditions. Programs and services
include maternity, pediatrics, pediatric intensive
care unit, pediatric subspecialty clinic, pediatric
neurodevelopment clinic, and the state’s only Level III
newborn intensive care unit.
