Advocacy - Contacting Your Legislative Representative

What Should I Say?

  1. Identify the issue or legislation by name and, if applicable, by bill number.
  2. Explain the issue in your own words.
  3. State your position.
  4. Tie your concerns about the issue directly to your institution; use facts and examples.
  5. If you can, tie your concerns into a current "hot button." (For example, a reduction in Medicaid reimbursement may force you to cut back on a drug rehabilitation program at a time when drugs are considered to be a critical social problem.)
  6. Ask for specific action.
