Albert Starr, M.D., renowned heart surgeon, Providence Heart and Vascular Institute medical director, and Providence’s director of academic affairs has been named as one of only four recipients of the Lasker Award.
Each year a select few physicians and scientists from around the world are named to receive the most coveted award in American medical science, the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award. On Saturday, Sept. 15, Dr. Albert Starr was named one of four physicians to receive this prestigious award. Working with the late Lowell Edwards, an engineer, Dr. Starr co-invented and implanted the world's first successful artificial heart valve in 1960. More than 175,000 people received the Starr-Edwards valves, the gold standard for heart valve replacements through the mid-1990s. News media from around the world are continuing to cover this story.
