The Curtis R. Holzgang, M.D., Visiting Scholar program, now in its ninth year, is named for the retired director of Critical Care Medicine at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center by his friends and colleagues. Dr. Holzgang was an inspiration in ethics education, especially to the internal medicine residents working in critical care. Dr. Holzgang was instrumental in establishing the Ethics Center in 2000. The Holzgang Visiting Scholar is a nationally known figure who is invited annually by the Center to speak on various issues of ethics in health care. Past scholars include Laurie Zoloth, Ph.D., Nuala Kenny, OC, M.D., FRCPC, and Arthur Derse, M.D., J.D. This lectureship is named for two role models of exemplary end-of-life care at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center: Robert Goldman, M.D., and John Berland, M.D. Dr. Goldman was an oncologist who helped initiate the hospice program at Providence in the 1970s. Dr. Berland is a retired internist with a passionate interest in palliative care and physician education and a frequent guest at Ethics Center programs. The Goldman-Berland lecturer is a clinical practitioner recognized nationally for excellence in palliative and end-of-life care. Past lecturers have been Steven Pantilat, M.D., FACP, Ira Byock, M.D., and in 2009, Judith Nelson, M.D., J.D.
