Providence ElderPlace has developed a partnership with representatives from the Chinese community to meet the needs of the underserved population of frail Chinese seniors in Portland. Eligible seniors who are interested in participating in ElderPlace receive all the benefits our program offers, including comprehensive medical care. In an effort to meet their social needs in a culturally competent way, ElderPlace has contracted for adult day care services from Yun On Adult Day Care Center. Yun On Adult Day Care Center opened their doors with Asian-focused meals and activities in November 2006. The center is available to serve twenty clients per day and is primarily focused on meeting the needs of Chinese seniors. ElderPlace’s Chinese participants attend our Laurelhurst health and social center once a week, primarily for medical services, and Yun On’s adult day care center once a week, primarily for activities. On Fridays at ElderPlace in Laurelhurst, beginning in August 2006, we began offering Asian meal options, culturally appropriate activities and décor recommended to be more inclusive of our new Chinese participants. Laurelhurst staff received diversity trainings, hired bilingual staff and developed new housing options for serving this population. As the number of Chinese participants attending Laurelhurst grows, visits to the ElderPlace center have become a social gathering as well as a medical visit. For callers who only speak Chinese, please say "Chinese" when you hear the receptionist answer and we'll bring an interpreter in on the call.
