Ross welcomed over 100 attendees to the Fifth Annual Providence Thoracic Oncology Symposium on November 11, 2006. This one-day workshop with experts in the fields of lung cancer research, treatment, and education was designed for patients and their family members. Michael Skokan, MD Pulmonologist, The Oregon Clinic Lung Cancer: Pulmonary Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment Dr. Skokan’s interests include interventional bronchoscopy, lung cancer evaluation and treatment and critical care medicine.
John R. Handy, Jr., MD Co-director, Providence Thoracic Oncology Program Director, Providence Thoracic Surgery Program Thoracic Surgeon, The Oregon Clinic Surgery and Lung Cancer Dr. Handy has a special interest in cancers of the chest, with an emphasis on advanced surgical techniques. He has specialized expertise in minimally invasive surgery.
Mark Weinmeister, MSW, LCSW Oncology Social Worker, patient advocate Extra Support for Lung Cancer Patients After directing programs for children, teens and families for several years, Mark Weinmeister graduated from Portland State University with his Master of Social Work degree and began working with families dealing with death and dying as a hospice social Worker. As a licensed clinical social worker and certified oncology social worker, he currently works with cancer patients and their families at Providence Cancer Center specializing in thoracic cancers. Mark also uses his clinical experience around chronic illness, grief and life transitions as a psychotherapist in private practice.
Jocelyn Libby, RN, LPC Cancer Counselor, Providence Cancer Support Services The Use of Mind-Body Skills in Cancer Care Jocelyn’s clinical focus is on helping people to cope and improving their quality of life when they experience a life-threatening illness. Along with teaching problem-solving skills to patients and their families, Jocelyn uses mind-body techniques such as relaxation, journaling, meditation, and guided imagery to help people decrease emotional distress.
Miles Hassell, M.D. Medical Director, Providence Integrative Medicine Program
Diet, Exercise and Lung Cancer Dr. Hassell specializes in patient-directed, noninvasive, non-pharmacological approaches to medicine in combination with conventional therapies. He emphasizes natural approaches such as exercise, diet and natural medicines.
Matthew Solhjem, MD Radiation Oncologist, The Oregon Clinic Lung Cancer and Radiation Therapy Dr. Solhjem has a special interest in the lung cancer treatment, smoking cessation, and using radiotherapeutic technology to minimize treatment-related side effects.
Loch Chandler, N.D., MSOM, L.Ac. Acupuncturist and naturopathic doctor Providence Integrative Medicine Program Integrative Medicine: How Acupuncture Can Help People with Cancer Before, During and After Treatment Dr. Chandler incorporates a variety of therapies into his practice. These include naturopathic medicine, nutritional assessment, Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
Helen J. Ross, MD Medical Oncologist Lung Cancer Oncology and Research Dr. Ross has a special interest and expertise in lung cancer. She has been the lead investigator on numerous lung cancer clinical trials and has lectured extensively throughout her career.
