Part of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute on the Providence Portland Medical Center Campus, the Franz Cancer Research Center houses a suite of class 10,000 cancer research laboratories that are GMP capable. These facilities are fully equipped to process and prepare autologous and allogeneic tumor vaccines, and process and/or expand PBMC and T cells through the Human Applications Laboratory.
Laboratory of Cancer Immunobiology
Hong-Ming Hu, Ph.D., is working to develop effective vaccination strategies that induce protective antitumor immunity in cancer patients through enhancement of immune responses during both the induction and effector phases.
Laboratory of Basic Immunology
Andrew Weinberg, Ph.D., is examining the role of members of the tumor necrosis factor receptor family, particularly OX-40, in the immune response to cancer. His lab is trying to determine whether the same white blood cells that destroy healthy tissue in autoimmune diseases can be directed against cancer cells to eradicate tumors.
Immunological Monitoring Laboratory
Edwin Walker, Ph.D., is developing, validating and using new, powerful, highly quantitative immunological assays to monitor immune response in cancer patients receiving different types of immunotherapy such as vaccines or cytokine therapy.
