Providence St. Vincent Medical Center: About Portland

Portland, Oregon, known as the City of Roses, is a vibrant city surrounded by breathtaking beauty. Tall trees, snow-capped mountains, lush green fields, gently flowing rivers, clean water and bountiful flower gardens surround one of the most livable cities in America.

The weather is generally mild, with average high temperatures in the 70s in the summer and the 40s in the winter. It does rain, about 40 inches per year, but most of the rain is concentrated in the winter, with a long, dry and mild summer. Significant snowfall occurs about once a year in the city.

The Portland metropolitan area is located in the northwestern corner of Oregon at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. It is about 65 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean on the Oregon-Washington state border, between the Cascade mountain range to the east and the Coast Range to the west. Skiing, hiking, fly-fishing, biking, and windsurfing are just some of the outdoor activities easily accessible from the city.

There are numerous things to do in and around the Portland metropolitan area including arts and cultural events, excellent restaurants, festivals, sports and recreation, shopping and more.
