graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications: - have received a currently valid certificate from ECFMG prior to appointment, or
- have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which they are training, or
- graduates of medical school outside of the U.S. who have completed a 5th pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school
Applicants should be eligible to be licensed in the State of Oregon and have USMLE/COMLEX passing on both Part I and Part II.
International medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG certification and U.S. citizenship, or permanent resident status. In addition, applicants should have demonstrable inpatient experience and credible letters of recommendation from an ACGME accredited teaching hospital within the last five years. Applicants must speak fluent English, though other language skills can be an asset. Passage of the 'English Proficiency' test for the ECFMG does not assure this level of competency.
Providence Health & Services, Portland Service Area will ensure that its ACGME-accredited programs select from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. ACGME accredited programs in the Portland Service Area will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
INTERVIEWS
Invitations for interviews will be extended following review of each individual application. Interviews are conducted from mid-November through January on Tuesdays, Wednesdays for categorical applicants & Fridays for preliminary applicants. Appointments are arranged by calling (800) 642-2131. We feel that personal contact is an important part of the application process. Face-to-face discussion during the interview allows a quality of communication that is not possible by letter or telephone. If you are planning on traveling to the Pacific Northwest, it is desirable that you notify us of your itinerary and provide a few alternative dates for the interview. The earlier we know of your plans, the more likely that we will be able to accommodate your schedule.
INTERVIEW DAY
During your visit you will receive an overview of the people and activities at Providence Portland Medical Center and have an opportunity to speak with both residents and faculty. On interview day, you will be greeted by the chief resident, attend morning report, tour the facilities with a resident, meet with the program director and interview with two faculty members. Lunch will be provided and hosted by residents. To provide another opportunity to interact with residents, weekly informal dinners are scheduled.
