Providence Names Dave Underriner Chief Executive for Portland Services

June 21, 2006

Portland, Ore.
 — Dave Underriner embarks on a new role with Providence Health & Services as chief executive for the Portland Service Area. In his new position, he will oversee operations of Portland’s three metro area hospitals - Providence Portland Medical Center, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and Providence Milwaukie Hospital.

In addition to overseeing hospital operations, Underriner will have responsibility for the health system’s Centers of Excellence and major clinical programs. He replaces Rick Cagen, who moved into an Oregon Region role recently as chief strategic and administrative officer.

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead Providence’s services and hospitals in the metro area,” said Underriner. “We are committed to our mission of caring for the poor and underserved and to excellence in providing care to patients and families.”

Underriner has been with Providence for 22 years – most recently as administrator of Providence Portland Medical Center for 10 years. His leadership of this award-winning medical center has resulted in recognition and honors, including:

  • Magnet Designation for excellence in patient and nursing care
  • Continued positive growth in employee satisfaction scores
  • Service Excellence programs to improve patient satisfaction
  • Top 100 Hospitals in the nation in 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000
  • 100 most wired hospitals and health systems, 2005

Underriner has been an active member of the community that is served by Providence Portland Medical Center. He currently sits on the boards of Janus Youth Programs, Trillium Family Services, Our House of Portland and Delta Society. He has received many awards, including the Providence Health & Services-Oregon Region Diversity Leadership Award and the Ethics in Business Award, individual category from  Samaritan Counseling Center.

Underriner earned a master’s degree in health service administration from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University.

Providence Health & Services will begin a national search for his replacement.
