PROVIDENCE SEASIDE BEGINS
NEW HOSPITALIST PROGRAM
WITH TWO NEW PHYSICIANS

Andrea Kielich, M.D. &
Franchot Van Slot, M.D.
  Feb. 19, 2008

SEASIDE, Ore. —Providence Seaside Hospital has hired two new physicians whose primary professional focus is caring for hospitalized patients. Franchot Van Slot, M.D. and Andrea Kielich, M.D. are hospitalists. They do not maintain a private practice. Instead, their activities include taking care of patients in the hospital, teaching and leadership related to hospital care.

Recent studies conclude that hospitalist-attended patients have better medical outcomes, lower costs and shorter lengths of stay in the hospital. Not only do hospitalists offer the patient on-site access to a physician, but hospitalists are familiar with key departments and individuals within the hospital, allowing for prompt connections with other health care personnel.

“With the shift to more care in the outpatient setting, today’s hospital patients are primarily those who are acutely ill,” says Dr. Van Slot, M.D. “As their care provider in the hospital, it allows me to recognize patients requiring special attention, anticipate problems, and rapidly respond to changes in a patient’s condition.”

“I especially enjoy getting to know patients and their families,” said Dr. Kielich. “I have the opportunity to communicate more frequently with patients, their families, and their primary care physicians. This gives me a chance to fully coordinate their care while in the hospital.”

Dr. Van Slot received his medical degree from Boston University and was an intern and resident at Ventura County Medical Center in California. He is board certified in family practice. Dr. Kielich received her medical degree from Georgetown University, interned at St. Louis University Health Sciences Center and was a resident at Oregon Health Sciences University. She is board certified in internal medicine.

“Hospital medicine is the fastest growing specialty in the U.S. and we are delighted to offer our patients state-of-the-art care,” states William Sexton, chief executive of Providence’s North Coast Service Area. “Consistent with our mission to provide access to medical care, these physicians are able to provide specialized care for our patients, at the time when they are most vulnerable.”
