Rehabilitation Services

Providence Mother Joseph Care Center offers a variety of rehabilitation services. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech/Language Therapy are available to all residents on the Transitional Care Unit, as well as the Long Term Care Unit. Restorative Therapy helps to maintain the highest level of physical functioning under close collaboration with therapy.

Physical Therapy
Physical therapy works to improve muscle strength, balance, walking and other physical abilities. The physical therapists treat individuals for neuro, musculoskeletal or joint related injuries such as:

  • Stroke    
  • Pain    
  • Ankle sprains and post-trauma    
  • Back and neck injuries    
  • Status-post fractures

Services are available for:

  • Gait and balance training    
  • Pain management    
  • Increasing flexibility at muscles and joints    
  • Individual exercise programs    
  • Body mechanics training    
  • Joint replacements

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy helps to restore the activities of daily living that allow more independence, such as dressing, bathing, grooming and self-feeding. An occupational therapist will also assist with upper body function, dynamic and static balance, and adaptive equipment needs. Occupational therapy services are available for:

  • Upper extremity injuries (fractures, shoulder replacements, arthritis, joint contractures)    
  • Lower extremity injuries (hip replacement, knee replacement)    
  • Back surgeries    
  • Assessment for equipment needs    
  • Adaptive equipment training (for self-feeding, dressing, toileting, bathing, etc.)    
  • Difficulty performing any activities of daily living as the result of illness, injuries such as stroke, COPD, cancer, CHF, MVA, Parkinsons)

Speech/Language Therapy
The Speech Language Pathologist assists in improving memory, language, speech and hearing problems for those who need to improve communication or cognitive skills. They also work with the dietitian on special nutrition needs or swallowing disorders. Speech language therapy services are offered for conditions such as:

  • Stroke    
  • Traumatic brain injury    
  • Progressive neuromuscular diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s, ALS, MS)    
  • Laryngectomy    
  • Voice problems    
  • Swallowing disorders    
  • Hearing loss
