Complementary Therapy

Non-medical therapies that promote comfort and well-being
Through its Complementary Therapy program, Providence Hospice of Seattle offers non-medical interventions—including massage, music therapy, animal-assisted activities/therapy, and so on—that complement the excellent medical and social support that our patients already receive from their hospice care teams

Patients and their families or caregivers can request visits from our licensed/certified complementary therapists for a variety of services, including:

Massage therapy
Massage therapy can help to encourage relaxation, minimize anxiety and stress, and reduce pain. Our massage therapists are trained in a variety of massage techniques, including:

  • Swedish massage: Massage technique that promotes relaxation and the release of muscular tension
  • Reflexology: Gentle pressure/movement that focuses on the feet and hands, reducing stress and easing anxiety
  • Reiki/energy work: Non-invasive touch that can induce feelings of peace and well-being
  • Craniosacral: Soft touch along specific points on the cranium; helps to ease pain and increase comfort
  • Aromatherapy: Use of scented botanical oils (such as lavendar or lemon) to alleviate tension and fatigue and invigorate the body

Music therapy
Trained music therapists provide harp, guitar, and/or vocal music that can help patients ease into a restful state. Therapeutic selections can often be tailored to suit the cultural background and preferences of the patient.

Animal-assisted activities/therapy
Through our animal-assisted activities/therapy (AAA/T) program, trained therapy dogs and their handlers visit patients and families, offering a friendly, calming presence that can have significant physiological and psychological benefits. Learn more...

Hypnotherapy (guided imagery)
Our certified hypnotherapist helps patients release tension and overcome anxiety through guided imagery, relaxation techniques, and deep breathing.

Meditation
Mindful breathing and meditation can quiet the mind and instill a sense of clarity and well-being.

Complementary therapists can also show family members and caregivers how to help the patient relieve stress and reduce pain between sessions.
