URINE COLLECTIONS - 24 hours
Instructions For Collection:
Caution: Many urine tests require acid preservatives. Please do not touch, drink or handle the preservatives in any way.
You may find it more convenient to void (urinate) into a smaller container and transfer the urine into the large container. Do not add anything but urine to the bottle and do not pour out any liquid or powder preservative that may already be in the collection bottle. Completeness of collection and exact timing of collection are very important. Do not drink alcoholic beverages during collection.
- Upon rising in the morning, urinate into the toilet, emptying your bladder completely. DO NOT COLLECT THIS SAMPLE. Write down the time and date.
- From this time forward collect ALL urine voided for 24 hours in this container.
- Refrigerate the collected urine between all voidings.
- At exactly the same time the following morning, void completely again and add this sample to the collection container. Write down the time and date.
- Keep the 24-hour urine specimen refrigerated and bring the specimen and the test requisition to the laboratory as soon as possible.
Urine Tests, With Special Dietary Requirements

OCCULT BLOOD
Patient Instructions
For accurate test results, apply samples from bowel movements collected on three different days to slide. Do not collect samples if blood is visible in your stool or urine (e.g. menstruation, active hemorrhoids, urinary tract infection). Contact your doctor. For the most accurate test results collect each stool sample before contact with the toilet bowl water. You may use any clean, dry container or plastic wrap or wax paper placed across the toilet bowl.
Return completed slides to your doctor or laboratory no later than 14 days after your first sample collection. Protect slides from heat, light, and volatile chemicals (iodine, ammonia, bleach, and household cleaners). Remove toilet bowl cleaners from toilet tank and flush twice before proceeding.
Drug Guidelines
For seven days before and during the stool collection period, avoid not-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirine (more than one adult aspirin a day). Acetamenophen (Tylenol) can be taken as needed. For three days before and during the stool collection period, avoid vitamin C in excess of 250 mg a day from supplements, and citrus fruits and juices.
Diet Guidelines
For three days before and during stool collection period, avoid red meats (beef, lamb and liver). Eat a well balanced diet including fiber such as bran cereals, fruits and vegetables. Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about medications you take regularly.
Specimen Collection
- Write your name and sample collection date on front side of slide in space provided
- Using applicator provided, collect small fecal sample.
- Apply a thin smear covering Box A.
- Reuse applicator to obtain second sample from a different part of stool. Apply a thin smear covering Box B.
- Close cover flap. Dispose of applicator in waste container.
- Return the slides to the Laboratory as soon as possible after collecting the last sample. IMPORTANT NOTE: Current U.S. Postal Regulations prohibit mailing completed slides in standard paper envelopes. If your slides are to be returned by mail use only U.S. Postal Service approved mailing pouches.

SEMINAL FLUID COLLECTION
Instructions
- No sexual relations for 3 days prior to sample collection.
- Collect specimen in morning. DO NOT USE A CONDOM - many of these contain a spermicide. The best collection method is by masturbation directly into a clean plastic or glass container. If you object to this procedure, then you may collect by withdrawing during intercourse (coitus interruptus) and allowing ejaculation into the container. ALL OF THE SEMEN IS TO BE COLLECTED - loss of any portion will give misleading analysis.
- Record the time of collection. Bring the specimen to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection. Keep sample away from temperature extremes and try not to agitate the sample during transportation.
