Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Call to Artists

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital will be opening its doors on a 36,000 sq. foot addition in March 2009. A central design principle for the new Hospital is having ambiance that reflects the healing arts for the mind, body and spirit. To achieve this, a committee of professional art consultants, community members, and hospital staff has been established to furnish the hospital with artwork - and work from local artists is a priority!

The hospital has a very public location on the second floor of the main lobby area that is in need of a special piece of artwork(s) that represents the beauty of the Gorge region. The wall is visible from the main entrance and the main lobby waiting areas. This space is 19 ft 6 inches in length and 10 ft in height. We would like to commission one or several pieces of art from one artist to display in this very prominent location. If multiple pieces are proposed they must be a related series or collection of works. This space is open to all mediums.

"I encourage all artists to submit their work for review. Aside from an opportunity for visibility, it is an opportunity to allow their art to contribute to healing and wellness in our community," says Jamie Guth, committee chair and Annual Giving Coordinator for Providence Hood River Foundation.

bullet The intent of the piece is to:
  • Instill a sense of warmth and healing
  • Appeal to a diverse audience (age, culture)
  • Complement the Hospital's interior palette and themes
  • Embraces all cultures and religions
  • Naturalize for children and adults the experience of coming to the hospital, and help them overcome their anxieties and fears
bullet Requirements are as follows:
  • All artwork becomes sole property of Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
  • Upon project selection, Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Art Jury has final say in location.
  • All artwork will be reviewed and approved by Art Jury.
  • 3 year minimum hanging life.
  • Artists choose the size and medium, but must be able to fit in the approved site dimensions.
  • Any and all mediums accepted; stained glass by advance review and approval to ensure compatibility with other stained glass in the project.
  • Must be culturally considerate.
  • Selected Artist must meet with Hospital's Plant Operations to discuss special accommodations for artwork before work begins.
  • Artist must be onsite for installation of project.
  • Projects must be removable.
  • Artwork must be installed by March 4, 2009.
bullet Submission of Materials:
  • A one-page letter of interest that describes your proposed art project, estimated budget, estimated size, medium, special accommodations for installation (i.e. base for display, special lighting, etc.) Tell us a bit about this project, your motivations, the meaning to you, how this project fits the mission of Providence Health and Services.
  • Artists Resume - Please limit to 2 pages and include a daytime telephone number and address
  • Self Addressed, Stamped Envelope. Only if you wish your materials returned.
  • Up to 10 JPEG Images of recent work on a CD-ROM, labeled with the artist's name. Images must be no larger than 1024 x 768 pixels, and 72dpi. Each image filename must be formatted as follows: Artist's last name, first initial, number corresponding to the number on the image list (e.g. smithp01 .jpg).
Budget for this commissioned piece of art is $7,500 including all expense, materials, travel, installation, artist's time, etc.

Deadline for submission is December 31, 2008. Selected artist will be notified by January 16, 2009. Materials should be addressed and delivered to:
