Prescription Drug Cost Help
The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides financial assistance for prescription drug costs for people with Medicare who have limited income. About half of our nation’s people with Medicare will qualify.
If eligible, Medicare could pay for 75% of drug costs including monthly prescription drug premiums, annual deductibles, coinsurance and copayments.
The SSA will review income and other resources when determining eligibility.
Income
The SSA considers your income in addition to your spouse’s income if he or she is living with you, even if your spouse isn’t applying for the extra help.
Resources
The SSA considers liquid assets and real estate:
- Liquid assets such as savings accounts, stocks, bonds, and other funds that could be changed to cash within 20 days.
- Real estate such as land or property that is not your primary residence.
Items such as vehicles, wedding rings, your primary residence and family heirlooms are not considered assets for purposes of the help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs.
