Providence Health Plan is committed to meeting the health needs of the people we serve. This commitment is an integral part of our responsibility to serve the common good.

Every year we contribute financially to local organizations. We support a broad range of community-based initiatives in our service area, with special concern for the poor and vulnerable.

2009 Areas of Focus

Our Community Needs Assessment, completed every three years, identifies the areas of focus for our giving. Charitable organizations and activities that address the following target areas are given priority.

• Access to behavioral health services
• Access to primary care services for low-income or uninsured
• Services for the frail and elderly
• Access to culturally competent care for diverse populations
• Essential community services (food, housing, shelter, basic services)

Sustainability – Care of the Earth

"Our Mission and core values call us to take initiative in support of our environment," says Russ Danielson, Oregon Region chief executive. "We see the pursuit of sustainability as an extremely important goal for us, and our investments in this area result in enormous returns and rewards for our organization and for the communities we serve."

In pursuit of this goal, Providence has formed a Sustainability Council. Under the leadership of Dan Stevens, Providence Health Plan's Regional Director of Network Development, the Council has worked to develop and implement sustainability initiatives that have received national recognition. The Environmental Leadership Circle of Hospitals for a Healthy Environment accepted the three Portland Service Area hospitals into their cadre. Providence has also received an EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year Award two times for outstanding energy management.

Providence continues its work in the area of environmental awareness through the expansion of our green building design and construction program, health and sustainable food buying, recycling initiatives and the purchase of more environmentally-friendly and reusable products.
