From the early days of settlement in the Pacific Northwest to the 21st century, Providence has been working to serve the greatest unmet needs of our communities. As a not-for-profit, Catholic health ministry it is our honor, tradition and commitment to support those who need help.
Providence talks to many community partners to help us determine the most significant needs. As part of our outreach, every three years we conduct a formal Community Assets and Needs Assessment to ask important questions about needs. This involves visiting and interviewing more than 150 local and statewide organizations and talking to care providers and those who receive care. Our findings enable us to respond to needs that can vary from city to town to neighborhood.
Two groups at Providence manage our grants and use the community assessment information to set priorities for giving.
This group includes Providence Health Plans, our hospitals and clinics, elder care experts, physicians, and other parts of our integrated health system. The council accepts grant applications for amounts up to $25,000.
This group is a partnership involving community and state advisors and our health system. It makes grants of between $50,000 and $400,000. During 2007 Providence Partners in Health invited 70 nonprofits and agencies to submit grant applications.
Providence Health & Services supports a variety of organizations and agencies through financial sponsorships and other partnerships that assist the underserved in Oregon and southwest Washington. Based on our community assessments, we tailor our programs to respond to regional, area and neighborhood needs.
"Community Warehouse deeply appreciates the good friendship of Providence. The generous support of Providence assists us in the continuation of our mission to provide people in need with essential household items necessary for a functional home. Simple items such as kitchenware to prepare and serve meals, beds to sleep in, and blankets to keep warm give our clients the opportunity to restore dignity, increase self-reliance and stability, and strengthen family relationships. We are grateful to Providence for their commitment to ensure that low-income people in Portland area communities have the basics required to help them move forward in their lives."
