In September, The Children’s Hospital at Providence unites with children, families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the nation to observe Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
In the United States, more than 12,000 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer annually; 3,000 children will not survive. In Alaska, there are about 30 new diagnoses of pediatric cancer each year.
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month spotlights the types of cancer that mainly affect children, their survivorship issues and the importance of raising funds to support local programs and critical research. Your participation in this month’s events and your generous donations will make a difference locally and nationally.
At The Children’s Hospital at Providence, cancer patients and families find leading technology paired with a compassionate, family-centered approach to care. Because the number of children diagnosed with cancer in Alaska is small, Providence partners with the pediatric cancer program at Seattle Children’s Hospital. However, since The Children’s Hospital at Providence began providing advanced cancer care, the time that patients with the most common diagnoses spend in Seattle has decreased from an average of six months to four weeks.
The Children’s Hospital at Providence oncology program now offers survivorship clinics, designed to reduce longer-term issues and highlight post-care prevention. The pediatric cancer center also provides inpatient chemotherapy to keep more kids at home in Alaska for their care.
