Every year, close to one million people survive heart attacks in the United States, and many more are diagnosed with some form of cardiovascular disease. Both the American Heart Association® and American College of Cardiology recommend cardiac rehabilitation for those with heart problems or those at risk.
Compassionate, expert care
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center offers a professionally supervised exercise and education program for patients who have had any of the following (a referral from the patient's primary physician is required to participate):
Heart attack
Coronary bypass surgery
Angioplasty
Coronary stent
Valve surgery
Stable angina
Heart transplant or heart-lung transplant
A board-certified cardiologist serves as Medical Director and supervises our program, which is backed by Providence Heart and Vascular Institute, the largest provider of cardiac services in the Pacific Northwest and one of the nation's premier cardiac centers.
Benefits of cardiac rehabilitation
Our program is designed to help patients significantly reduce their risk of heart disease or recurrence, and to help restore their sense of well-being.
How does the program work?
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Center provides a Phase II program, which usually begins one to two weeks after a patient is discharged from the hospital. Before beginning the Phase II program, patients go through an individualized orientation and health assessment with our staff. Then patients begin a monitored exercise program that normally lasts eight to 12 weeks.
In addition, patients participate in education classes on heart disease, nutrition, stress management and lifestyle changes. As patients learn how to reduce cardiac risk factors, they learn to enhance the quality of their lives.
Does insurance cover cardiac rehabilitation?
Most health insurers now provide coverage for cardiac rehabilitation, but some do not. Patients should check their insurance coverage before beginning cardiac rehab. Those who have limited finances and lack insurance may apply for Providence financial assistance before their first appointment.
