The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute

Overview

The Earle A. Chiles Research Institute (EACRI) is a multidisciplinary center devoted to health care study. Since 1960, research activities at the Providence Portland Medical Center-based EACRI have resulted in life-saving and cost-saving treatment for patients with heart disease, cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases. Collaborating with local physicians and scientists at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, physicians here have delved into various aspects of cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

Research

Scientists at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute are currently conducting research in the following areas of cardiovascular therapy: evaluation of new medications for treating high blood pressure, angina and congestive heart failure; control of irregular heart rhythms in post-heart-attack (add hyphen to heart-attack) patients; and laser therapy of obstructed arteries. Within the Robert W. Franz Cancer Research Center, which is part of the EACRI, cancer researchers are focusing on new ways to enlist the immune system to fight cancer.

Future Study

Topics slated for future study at EACRI will focus on the investigation of new heart and circulation measuring devices, such as isotopes, and the use of sound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study lipids and cholesterol disorders.
